| Info | José Alvarado was first elected county legislator for the 17th District of Southwest Yonkers in 2001, earning him the distinction of becoming Westchester’s first Hispanic/Latino county legislator. In his three terms on the County Board, Mr. Alvarado has served on several committees including Public Works, Transportation, Labor & Parks; Community Affairs; and, Seniors. He was elected by his peers to serve as the Democratic caucus’ Majority Whip. Currently, County Legislator Alvarado is chairman of the powerful Budget & Appropriations Committee.
When José moved from his native Honduras to Yonkers in 1982, he arrived having had only minimal exposure to a formal education and the English language. To help support his mother and five siblings, José held a series of minimum wage jobs while working to earn his high school equivalency diploma. While studying business at Mercy College, José volunteered as an English tutor in the school’s bilingual program. This experience launched what has been an unbroken commitment to serve his community and a life of public service.
Alvarado’s volunteerism over the years spans a wide variety of community and civic groups including, CLUSTER; his parish, Iglesia San Andres; the Boy Scouts of America; the NAACP; NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials) and LCLAA (Labor Council for Latin American Advancement); the Southwest Yonkers Committee of Seven; the Yonkers’ Third Precinct Community Council; and, the Yonkers-South Broadway Business Improvement District.
José has served on the Advisory Boards of the White Plains Hospital Diabetes Center; the Westchester Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; the Yonkers Mexican Chamber of Commerce, and, the Westchester Community College Yonkers Extension. He is also a member of Congresswoman Nita Lowey’s Hispanic Advisory Group.
County Legislator Alvarado earned his B.A. in Accounting from Mercy College. He pursued his graduate work at Pace University where he earned a master’s degree in Public Administration/Health Care. He is currently employed as the Special Advisor to the President of White Plains Hospital Center for Outreach to the Hispanic Community and as Advisor of Community Relations to the law firm of Jeffrey J. Shapiro and Associates. He also teaches Political Science at Mercy College.
José and his wife Karla are the parents of two young daughters, Amy and Melina.
