| Info | Commissioner Keith Baker began serving as Chaffee County commissioner, District 1 in January 2017.
Keith was elected as a Chaffee County Commissioner in November 2016 and sworn into office on 10 January 2017.
Keith brings a wealth of experience and a track record of outstanding achievement to his position. Before being elected, Keith served eight years as a Buena Vista Town Trustee where he led on community development, transportation, trails, and environmental issues.
Overlapping his second trustee term, Keith served as Executive Director of Friends of Browns Canyon, leading to the successful designation of Browns Canyon National Monument. Here he coordinated local efforts with key partners to protect this unique landscape through innovative multi-agency and organizational outreach and advocacy programs.
Together with his wife Evelyn, he owned and operated The Trailhead and Trailhead Cycle & Ski in Buena Vista for over nine years and has been a leader in numerous civic organizations in Chaffee County.
Previously, Keith served 23 years as a U.S. Navy officer in a variety of command and staff billets, retiring with the rank of commander. In addition to his leadership positions at sea, he coordinated interagency policy on a variety of national security programs during a three-year assignment to the Joint Staff at the Pentagon.
He deployed around the globe in aircraft carriers, guided-missile destroyers and guided-missile cruisers, operating with every numbered fleet and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and other allied forces during the Cold War and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
His sea service assignments include USS Saratoga (CV 60), USS Chandler (DDG 996) and USS Leahy (CG 16). Ashore, Keith served as an instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) Pacific, a strategic policy planner on the Joint Staff/J-5, and on the faculty of U.S. Air Force Command and Staff College where he served in a Ph.D. billet.
Keith and Evelyn are parents to two adult daughters and have had several Weimaraners over the years to accompany them on their many outdoors adventures. They are members of Grace Church in Buena Vista.
