Omar Montgomery enjoys working one on one with students at the University of Colorado Denver, where he can see their growth and assist them in maximizing their academic potential. His most notable contribution is the coordinating of the “Rites of Passage Program,” which is a cultural approach to develop future leaders organized by his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi. The goal of ROP is to provide youth with the confidence and social tools needed to approach many of the distractions that may affect their ability to become productive members of society. As the director of Black Student Services, Montgomery started the annual Rosa Parks Diversity Awards Luncheon in 2006, which recognizes CU Denver faculty, staff and community leaders for their contributions to diversity. He was instrumental with starting the Junior Black Chamber of Commerce Leadership Training Program, which provide CU Denver students with a full academic year of leadership training. Mr. Montgomery is committed to increasing the number of first generation low-income students at the University of Colorado Denver through aggressive outreach efforts and innovative pipeline programs. Mr. Montgomery believes, “Building future leaders is essential to the future of America.” Montgomery’s long-term goal is to develop programs that offer leadership strategies to young adults from elementary school to adulthood. Low-income youth in many cases do not have the opportunity to participate in early leadership programs such as the Boy/Girl Scouts, but if we as a society invest in developing free leadership programs that teach civic responsibility, we will have a pipeline of mentors and leaders committed to serving the community.
