InfoLeven Handy Ellis, of Columbiana, was born at Nixburg, Coosa County, Alabama, on April 6, 1881. He was the son of Franklin Handy and Eliza (Wren) Ellis, the former a native of Coosa County, Ala.; grandson of Levan Handy[sic] and Mariah Culver Ellis also of Coosa County, and Mack and Sarah Wren of Elmore and later Coosa County, Alabama.

Mr. Ellis obtained his education in the public schools of Coosa County, received a B. Ped. degree from the Troy Normal School in 1907, and was awarded a LL.B. degree by the University of Alabama in 1909. Beginning the practice of law in Columbiana on June 1, 1909 he continued at that place for many years. He was State Senator from the Fifteenth Senatorial District from 1927 to 1931 and a member of the House of Representatives of the Alabama Legislature from 1936 to 1943. In addition, he was Mayor of Columbiana for two terms, delegated to the Democratic National Convention from the sixth Congressional District of Alabama in 1940, member of the Code Committee of the Alabama Legislature in 1940, and was a member of the State Board of Education since 1927. He was a Democrat, having served as Chairman of the Shelby County Executive Committee of this party; Methodist; Shriner; Elk and an Eagle.

On September 30, 1908 he was married to Bertha daughter of Wiley James and Francis Miller Corley of Flint Hill, Coosa County, Alabama, the wedding taking place at Rockford, Alabama. His children are Frank C., Evelyn, Mary Louise, Bertha and Margaret.

Ellis died on January 4, 1968.
