InfoJoseph N. Carter was born on March 3, 1843, in Hardin County, Kentucky. He served three months as a private in Company A of the 70th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War in 1862. After the war, he received his A.B. from Illinois College, Jacksonville in 1866, and his LL.B. from the University of Michigan, 1868. He was admitted to the bar in 1869, and practiced in Quincy until his election to the Illinois House of Representatives, where he served from 1878 - 1882. He served on the Illinois Supreme Court from June 1894 - June 1903, and as Chief Justice from June 1898 - June 1899. Judge Carter died on February 6, 1913, in Quincy, Illinois.
