| Info | Chapman, 24, is a sales manager at HPL Construction who said he entered the race in part because he so many people his age moving away from Decatur. He said many leave because of a lack of good jobs, though he also criticized the perception that there are no jobs available in Decatur.
“You can’t hold people’s hands the whole time, but I really believe that people, they want to work,” he said. “They want to be a part of the community, and if they feel like their voice is being heard and they’re getting helped along, then they really would be a part of it; not everybody, but a good portion.”
In general, a negative perception of the city is its greatest challenge, Chapman said, calling his generation one of the worst offenders in terms of perpetuating that image of Decatur.
“Hopefully, if I were to win, I would actually be able to speak to them and, hopefully, have them listen,” he said.
Chapman attended Decatur Christian School and Cerro Gordo High School, from which he graduated in 2009. Following high school, he studied culinary management at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for two years, then lived in Chicago for six months before returning to Decatur.
