Candidate for Indiana Secretary of State
Since 1995, John Fernandez has served as Bloomington's Mayor and Chief Executive. A tireless consensus building leader, John has created jobs, kept taxes low, increased green space and revitalized the city's downtown. John Fernandez has made Bloomington one of the state's most desirable cities in which to raise a family, earn a good living and grow a business.

In less than 8 years John has:
Helped secure more than $143 million in private investments and helped create more than 2,300 jobs

Increased the number of neighborhood police officers by 25%

Driven Bloomington's property tax rate down by 5%

Increased annual resources for childcare assistance from $1 million to more than $3 million, serving over 800 children

Worked with community leaders to improve enrollment in Hoosier Healthwise, Indiana's health insurance program for children.
John's record of accomplishments has earned the respect of his colleagues at home and across the United States. He is vice president of Indiana's Metropolitan Mayors Alliance. He is a member of the United Conference of Mayors Task Force on E-commerce and Internet Technology and the Board of the Indiana Technology Partnership.

As Secretary of State, John will bring his energy and new ideas statewide, continuing to develop innovative economic development strategies for the new economy. He knows how to make government work better with less.

John was raised in Kokomo. His dad is a retired UAW worker and his mom is a retired nurse. A close family, John says they gave him every opportunity to succeed. He hopes to give something back to his family and his state by working hard for us as our next Secretary of State.

John earned his Bachelor, Masters, and law degrees from Indiana University.

John and his wife Karen are the proud parents of Isabel, born on the eve of John's re-election as Mayor. Karen is an attorney with the Bloomington law firm of Ferguson and Ferguson.
