InfoJames George Stavridis is the dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, the oldest school in the United States dedicated solely to graduate studies in international affairs. He is also chairman of the board of the U.S. Naval Institute. Stavridis is a retired United States Navy admiral who served as the 15th Commander, U.S. European Command and NATO's 16th Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He is the first Navy officer to have held these positions. His book The Accidental Admiral, describing his tenure in these jobs, was published in October 2014. Previously, he served as Commander, U.S. Southern Command from October 2006 to June 2009.

Stavridis is a 1976 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He earned a Ph.D and Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School International Relations in 1984, where he won the Gullion Prize. He is an associate fellow of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

On July 12, 2016, The New York Times and other media organizations reported that Stavridis is being vetted by the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign as a possible vice presidential running mate on the Democratic ticket.
