Info | Gay Mitchell is the Fine Gael candidate for the Presidential election. Born in Dublin, Gay was educated at the College of Commerce (now Dublin Institute of Technology) and Queen’s University in Belfast. Gay came into politics through involvement in youth work and community activism. He was a youth leader at St Joseph’s Boys’ Club in his native Inchicore for 11 years.
He also served on the National Youth Council and was treasurer and later president of a St Vincent de Paul network of 20 youth clubs across Dublin. He met his wife, Norma, through this youth club network and they have four children.
Gay Mitchell’s mother, Eileen, was left a widow with nine children whom she supported by working as an office cleaner. As a teenager Gay served time to the ancient Dublin craft of coach building. He is a chartered company secretary and accountant.
He chose to study politics at Queen’s University, Belfast, because of his strong interest in Northern Ireland issues and he remains an advocate of mutual respect and cooperation among all groups across Ireland.
Gay has over 32 years political experience, as a Dublin City Councillor, TD, Minister for European Affairs and currently as MEP for Dublin.
Gay’s political conviction is informed by an ethos based on four principles; rights, responsibilities, enterprise and social justice. These are the values that have guided him in public life and will guide him if elected President.
