Unopposed in Ohio�s Third Congressional District primary and unanimously endorsed by the Democratic Party and the AFL-CIO, Jane Mitakides is dedicated to returning our government to fiscal responsibility while meeting the moral responsibilities of this great nation: educating our young, caring for our seniors, and making sure affordable healthcare is available for all Americans. At the top of her list of priorities is full funding and expansion of benefits for our veterans, who are still being shamefully shortchanged by a nation that should be grateful, not grudging.
Jane is running hard against a first term congressman, who has voted 96% of the time with the Republican congressional agenda, while Ohio is still hemorrhaging jobs. Ohio�s unemployment rate just went up again, and the state is reeling from a loss of over 250,000 jobs, which has affected every sector� manufacturing, service, information technology� and there is no end in sight to the outsourcing of our future. There are 86,000 veterans in this district, and they are still waiting for adequate funding for benefits and health care.
This is a highly winnable race, in a district that, even as redrawn, has demonstrated Democratic performance of about 47%. Clinton/Gore carried Montgomery County (over 75% of the 3rd District vote) twice, and it was carried by Gore/Lieberman. In 2002, Democratic Congressman Tony Hall left this seat open when he was appointed by President Bush to a U.N. ambassadorial post, but unfortunately that confirmation was delayed until September 9 before the election, making a tough race for the Democrats.
Jane is a native Daytonian with deep roots in the community, the daughter of one of Dayton�s �Tool Town� engineers. She began her career on Madison Avenue, with the firm of Calderhead-Jackson Advertising. She returned to Ohio and later founded Helsley Advertising, specializing in strategic communications and investor relations. During the 1990�s, Jane invested in a small recycling firm and has helped grow DRNA, Inc. into the fastest-growing dental waste management and recycling company in North America.
She is also a founding member of both the Women�s Council of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and The Small Business Council of the Democratic National Committee, working hard to bring women and businesspeople into the political process.
Jane has been married for 22 years to John Mitakides, a dentist who has practiced in the Dayton area for 30 years. They both graduated from Centerville High School in Dayton, attended Ohio public universities (Jane at Wright State and John at Ohio State, where he played football). Jane is also the very proud mother of two children: Katie, a graduate of Hollins University, who is completing her Master�s Degree in International Relations, and Andrew, a student and varsity golfer at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
