Info | Incumbent MP John McKay is once again the candidate for Scarborough-Guildwood.
First elected to the House of Commons in 1997, Mr. McKay currently serves as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, and is a Member of the Privy Council. Prior to his appointment, John acted as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and as a Member of both the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration and the Sub-Committee on Organized Crime. He is currently a Member of the Standing Committee on Finance.
Mr. McKay was chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus from 2002 to 2004, and Chair of the National Liberal Social Caucus on Homelessness and Affordable Housing. He is also a member of the Economic Development Caucus.
In 2000, Mr. McKay successfully sponsored Private Member's Bill C-260 in the House of Commons, a Bill that amended the Hazardous Products Act to mandate that all cigarettes sold in Canada be fire-safe. The Bill received unanimous support of the Members of the House of Commons – an extremely rare occurrence - and went on to receive Royal Assent on March 31st, 2004. Canada is currently the only federal jurisdiction in the world to have such legislation.
Prior to his parliamentary career, as a practicing lawyer Mr. McKay was president of the Durham Law Association and executive member of the County and District Law President's Association. He is the recipient of the UTSC Alumnus of the Year Award 2000, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, and the University of Toronto Arbor Award.
Born and raised in Scarborough, Mr. McKay and his wife, Carolyn, have five children.
