InfoPhilip Mayfield is the Member of Parliament for the Cariboo-Chilcotin. He is the Official Opposition Deputy-Critic for the Treasury Board and a member of the Public Accounts Committee.

Mr. Mayfield first entered politics as a volunteer for the Reform Party. He was nominated as the Reform candidate for the Cariboo-Chilcotin in 1992 and elected as the federal Member of Parliament in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997.

In March 2000, the Reform Party merged with other political groups to form the Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance. Mr. Mayfield was nominated as the Canadian Alliance candidate and was re-elected for a third term on November 27, 2000.

Mr. Mayfield has had a wide range of experience in the House of Commons. He has served as a member and critic on Parliamentary Committees dealing with Revenue Canada, Citizenship and Immigration, Small Business and Tourism, Aboriginal Affairs, Child Custody and Access, and Public Accounts. He has been active in several internal party studies, including the Reform Party Task Force on the Family. Believing that the Canadian Alliance would benefit from new leadership, he was an early supporter and active campaigner for Stockwell Day.

Philip says that he keeps two primary objectives in mind while serving as a Member of Parliament. They are:

* "To work hard to fully and democratically represent the people of the Cariboo-Chilcotin riding."
* "To work hard to reform the political system so that it democratically represents the people of Canada."

Prior to entering political life, Philip was a Minister of the United Church of Canada. He was ordained in 1965 and served congregations throughout British Columbia and Alberta for 27 years. His first ministry was at Kitimat Village Indian Village. Three years later, he and his family moved to Alberta. During the next 15 years, Philip served congregations in both Calgary and Edmonton. He developed a competence in pastoral counselling and spent four years as a hospital chaplain. The last 9 years of his ministry service were in downtown Vancouver.

Philip took his early schooling in Williams Lake, graduating from Williams Lake Junior/Senior High School in 1956. He attended the University of British Columbia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology and Classical English Literature). He then studied for three years at Union College, to earn his Testamur in Ministry.

Philip has been an outdoorsman all his life. He loves fishing and was an avid hunter in his younger days. He was raised on a cattle ranch and began horseback riding as a child. He still rides today. Philip has always had a passion for photography. His interests range from the micro-photography of small flowers to the grandeur of the sweeping vistas in the Cariboo-Chilcotin.

Philip owns and pilots a Cessna 182, which he uses for both business and pleasure. He is able to fly to the furthest reaches of the constituency in an hour and a half. The same destination by road can take up to six hours.

Philip was born in Williams Lake. His family has lived in the Cariboo continuously since 1929. His grandparents were Americans, who came to the Cariboo country as ranchers. Philip was raised on the 141 Mile House and Springhouse ranches and was an experienced stockman and horseman. He retains those interests today.

Philip is married to Patricia, who worked as a registered nurse for many years. They have three children and two grandchildren, all living in British Columbia.
