Info | DANA, Amasa, a Representative from New York; born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., October 19, 1792; attended private schools and Dana Academy, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; studied law in Owego, N.Y.; was admitted to the bar in 1817 and practiced; moved to Ithaca, N.Y., in 1821 and continued the practice of law; district attorney of Tompkins County 1823-1837; member of the State assembly in 1828 and 1829; president and trustee of the village of Ithaca in 1835, 1836, and 1839; elected judge of the court of common pleas of Tompkins County in 1837; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1841); was not a candidate for renomination in 1840; resumed the practice of law; elected to the Twenty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1845); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy (Twenty-eighth Congress); resumed the practice of his profession and also engaged in banking; died in Ithaca, Tompkins County, N.Y., on December 24, 1867; interment in Ithaca City Cemetery.
