Info | WHEATON, Horace, a Representative from New York; born in New Milford, Litchfield County, Conn., February 24, 1803; moved with his parents to Pompey, Onondaga County, N.Y., in 1810; received a limited schooling; was graduated from Pompey (N.Y.) Academy; engaged in mercantile pursuits; member of the State assembly in 1834; one of the commissioners to build a railroad between Syracuse and Utica; postmaster of Pompey, N.Y., 1840-1842; supervisor of Pompey; city treasurer; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1847); was not a candidate for renomination in 1846; moved to Syracuse, N.Y., in 1846; mayor of Syracuse 1851-1853; city treasurer of Syracuse in 1857 and 1858; engaged in hardware, saddlery, and mercantile pursuits; died in Syracuse, N.Y., June 23, 1882; interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
