Lois Cohen has made leadership a career. From education to finance to community, Lois has worked both on the front lines and behind the scenes in public service.
For the past 25 years, Lois and her husband Marvin Cohen have lived in Columbus, Georgia. They have raised two sons in Columbus, Larry and Scott, who both live and work in Atlanta. Larry is a graduate of Emory University and of the Morehouse School of Medicine, where he currently is in his residency in Preventive Medicine. Scott also graduated from Emory and works as a Senior Account Executive at Miramar Securities, Inc.
In Columbus, Lois has been an active community leader. She has served on the boards of the Cancer Society, Columbus Chamber, Goodwill and Temple Israel. She still serves on the boards of Black History Week, Georgia Health Decisions, the United Way and the Columbus Medical Center Foundation. She has received a Presidential Award from Network Professionals and Executives, as well as the 1989 Woman of Achievement award from Concharty Council of Girl Scouts.
In her professional life, Lois has taught high school and business school, has been a college administrator and she has been a securities broker and an executive. Most recently, Lois resigned her position as President of Miramar Securities, Inc. to focus full-time on her campaign for Insurance Commissioner for Georgia.
So, with all the good things Lois has been doing, why is she running for Insurance Commissioner?
She's running because she cares about Georgia, and more importantly, she cares about Georgians. She feels it is time for Georgia families and small businesses to have an Insurance Commissioner who is looking out for their interests and not primarily for the interests of the insurance industry and other businesses regulated by the Commissioner's office. Lois believes in enforcing the regulations, checks and balances created by the Georgia Legislature, and she believes in fair business practices.
As Insurance Commissioner, Lois Cohen will work for Georgia by:
 Making health insurance affordable
Working with consumers, insurance companies and the legislature to find working solutions to Georgias health insurance crisis. Health insurance costs have increased by 25% over the last year alone. We need good coverage at affordable premiums.
 Protecting consumers' rights
Enforcing existing laws and lobby for additional regulations to protect consumers from unfair practices.
 Fighting fraud
Making the best use of the Insurance Commissioner's office resources to investigate and resolve consumer complaints.
Bringing ethics back to the office
Continuing her pledge to not take campaign donations from interests that the Insurance Commissioners office regulates, and operating all functions of the office in an ethical manner.
