Sheriff William L. Polhemus is responsible for preserving the peace and providing the security for the judges, courts, and the people who use them. He executes summons orders, subpoenas, and warrants. As Sheriff he is also responsible for the Office of Emergency Management, Communications Division, Enhanced 911, the Criminal Investigation Unit, Criminalistics (Forensics), Project Lifesaver, the Marine Unit, the County-Wide Identification Program, the Child Passenger Safety Seat Program and the Police Academy. The Sheriff also provides K-9 support for all 33 municipalities including Bloodhounds to track people, bomb dogs, drug dogs and an arson and cadaver dog.
Sheriff Polhemus works closely with the Board of Chosen Freeholders to continually upgrade and maintain the law enforcement communications network throughout the County.
Sheriff Polhemus took office in 1986 and is serving the first year of his ninth term. He formerly served in the Seaside Heights Police Department for 35 years, five as Chief.
