Info | Broward County Mayor Ilene Lieberman has had an influential and well respected political presence in Broward County since she became a Lauderhill City Council Member in 1984. In their endorsement of her for County Commission, the Sun-Sentinel's Editorial board stated that "she has been a dynamic, high energy and high-accomplishment political leader with a capital L ever since she first took office." When she was elected to the County Commission, it is said that she added a whole new dimension.
Mayor Lieberman's accomplishments in the political arena as well as her commitment to community service have been well recognized. Her strength is in her diversity as eight awards of note illustrate: in 2002, she was named one of Broward County's 50 Most Influential People by Gold Coast Magazine and also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the David Posnack Hebrew Day School, in 1998 she received the Humanitarian of the Year Award; in 1997, she received the Woman of the Year Award from the American Jewish Congress, the Distinguished Alumni Award from her Alma Mater, State University of New York, College at Cortland and the Woman of Distinction Award from the March of Dimes; in 1992, she received the Distinguished Community Service Award from the United Nations Association and in 1990, she won the Mother of the Year Award from Temple Beth Israel.
Mayor Lieberman was named the first Vice-Mayor of Broward County in November, 2002. She is a past President of the Florida League of Cities and currently on its Board of Directors, as well as the Advisory Counsel of the National League of Cities. She was Chair of the Florida Association of Counties Urban Caucus and Chair of Florida's Complete Count Committee. She is on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club and maintains memberships with numerous service clubs and community organizations that benefit from her involvement. She is the Broward County liaison to the Federal Government. She is also the Board of County Commission appointment to the Broward Alliance, the Resource Recovery Board, South Florida Regional Planning Council and the Broward County Planning Council.
A mother of three, Vice Mayor Lieberman attended and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center in 1989 and was the class Valedictorian.
