Info | Glenn Watson was born on August 22, 1940 in Boston, Massachusetts but got to Huntsville as quickly as he could. The year was 1958 when Glenn discovered the greatness of the South, and Alabama in particular. He married Alice in Huntsville in 1959. They subsequently had three children—Connie, Kathy and Skip.
Glenn spent eight years in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged twice. He is a huge supporter of our military and believes there is no higher calling than defending our country.
Glenn graduated from the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) in 1969. Inspired by a restaurant he frequented for years before moving south, Glenn established Stanlieo’s Sub Villa on Jordan Lane Road in 1971. Enjoying that success, Glenn then opened a second Huntsville location on Governor’s Drive in 1981.
Glenn was bitten by the political bug and ran for the Huntsville City Council where he served from 1996-2008. Three times during those twelve years, Glenn was elected by his peers on the council to serve as President of that body.
During Glenn’s tenure on the city council, Huntsville experienced unprecedented growth, becoming the sixth most desirable city in the United States, up from being previously ranked at 170th. The city saw new parks, new road-paving projects, a repeal of Sunday Blue Laws and other progressive works during Glenn’s service to the folks in Huntsville.
Glenn sold his interest in Stanlieo’s to other family members in later years, but he is still considered to be “the boss” of the two stores.
While in Southeast Asia in 2002, Glenn was a surviving victim of the tsunami that devastated that part of the world. Despite a huge laceration and a broken nose caused by swirling debris, Glenn reached out in the midst of the tsunami and saved a small child from drowning. Stirred by that event, Glenn worked tirelessly to help build an orphanage for children whose parents were killed in the catastrophe. Today, Glenn continues to raise money to keep the orphanage going.
Despite retirement form the restaurant business, Glenn devotes time to his four grandchildren and serves as a substitute teacher in the Huntsville city school system.
