Info | SMITH, Hiram Ypsilanti, a Representative from Iowa; born in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio, March 22, 1843; moved with his parents to Rock Island, Ill., in 1850, and to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1854; attended the public schools; in 1861 enlisted in the State militia for service against the Indians; appointed a clerk in the Post Office Department, Washington, D.C., and served from January 1862 to February 1864; transferred to the Treasury Department, from which he resigned in August 1865; was graduated from the Albany (N.Y.) Law School in 1866; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Des Moines, Iowa; district attorney of the fifth judicial district of Iowa 1875-1879; member of the State senate 1882-1884; elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John A. Kasson and served from December 2, 1884, to March 3, 1885; was not a candidate for reelection to the Forty-ninth Congress; resumed the practice of law; died in Des Moines, Iowa, November 4, 1894; interment in Woodland Cemetery.
