InfoSteve Castleman is a career prosecutor who has spent more than twenty years in the forefront of innovative law enforcement.

A 17-year veteran of the San Francisco District Attorney's office - Mr. Castleman worked his way through the office from the bottom-up. Starting as an investigator trainee, he served as a criminal investigator for 5 years while attending law school at night.

After passing the bar, Mr. Castleman became a prosecutor - rapidly rising to the Superior Court Division - and ultimately creating the San Francisco District Attorney's cutting edge Environmental Enforcement Program.

Before initiating the District Attorney's environmental crimes unit, Mr. Castleman specialized in White Collar Crime. He successfully prosecuted San Francisco's largest landlord, Parkmerced for charging unlawful security deposits resulting in $335,000 in fines and refunds to thousands of tenants.

In 1983, Mr. Castleman won the first jury conviction in California history in a criminal toxic waste case. Among his other notable cases were prosecutions for illegal possession of radioactive material, improper handling of propane gas tanks and asbestos violations.

Mr. Castleman's 1985 investigation into the City and County of San Francisco's compliance with environmental laws jolted city government. Castleman's investigation revealed that each day, the city was exposing San Franciscans to what the San Francisco Examiner called, "serious and potentially catastrophic conditions." His report documenting the City's violations resulted in the establishment of the City's first comprehensive environmental compliance program

Two years later, the Golden Gate National Recreational Area also established an environmental compliance program as a result of Mr. Castleman's investigation of the agency's practices.

In 1992, Mr. Castleman won one of the most important criminal environmental cases in the State of California. He obtained 5 felony convictions against the Triple A Machine Shop for illegally dumping toxic wastes at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in the Bayview section of San Francisco.

Since leaving the San Francisco District Attorney's office in 1993, Mr. Castleman has worked as a consultant to law enforcement and to environmental groups. He was lead counsel in two of San Francisco BayKeeper's important cases: a challenge to the Environmental Impact Report for the new Giants' ballpark in China Basin, and a suit against the United States Navy for Clean Water Act violations at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

Currently, Mr. Castleman is a part of the prosecution team suing oil companies for Proposition 65 violations involving toxic groundwater contamination on behalf of the Solano County District Attorney.

Mr. Castleman has been a highly sought after instructor, specializing in training investigators and prosecutors in environmental chemistry and scientific evidence for, among others: the California District Attorney's Association; CalEPA; the California Air Resources Board; the California Department of health Services; the University of California and US EPA.

He received a BA from Yale University in Chinese studies and a JD from the University of San Francisco Law School. He is married to Robin Wolaner an internet media company executive and they have two children.
