born in Los Angeles, Calif., on March 26, 1925; educated in local public schools; B.A., Occidental College, 1950; attended University of California Law School, 1951; admitted to the California bar in 1973; served as a combat infantryman with General Patton?s Third Army during the Second World War; president of Compania del Pacifico, a Latin American export firm; State assemblyman, 1954-1962; State senator, 1962-1965; delegate, Democratic National Conventions, 1956, 1960, 1964, and 1968; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-ninth Congress, by special election, December 15, 1965, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Roosevelt; reelected to the five succeeding Congresses, and served from December 15, 1965, to January 3, 1977; was not a candidate for reelection in 1976 to the Ninety-fifth Congress; commenced the practice of law in Washington, D.C., and San Jose, Calif.; president, Community Development and Management, San Jose, Calif.; is a resident of Santa Cruz, Calif.
