InfoFormer Lafourche Parish President and Sheriff Cyrus "Bobby" Tardo died Thursday in a federal prison hospital, where he was serving time for the attempted murder of Sheriff Duffy Breaux Jr.

Tardo, 61, formerly of Thibodaux, died of heart failure at 7:42 a.m., said Officer William Baker of the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Mo., where Tardo had been transferred for treatment of heart problems.

Tardo and three others pleaded guilty to the Dec. 15, 1988, remote-controlled pipe bomb attack on [Duffy] Breaux outside the Thibodaux Civic Center.

Breaux's left foot was almost blown off and former part-time Deputy Daniel "Judge" Leche was injured in the parking lot of the center, where the two had attended a Christmas party for the elderly.

Surgeons at Thibodaux Hospital and Health Centers reattached Breaux's foot, but the 63-year-old Breaux said he still has pains in the foot and leg.

"I can walk, but I can't run," Breaux said.

Tardo never left federal custody after he was arrested at his home Feb. 2, 1989, and was serving a 29-year and five-month sentence.

John G. Tullier Jr. of St. Amant is serving 19 years and eight months, former Baton Rouge policeman Marshall McClendon of Slaughter is serving 24 years, and former Houma police officer Ralph Bergeron of Slaughter is serving 11 years for their roles in the attack.

Tardo plotted the assassination attempt for 12 years _ apparently in revenge for Breaux's political defeats of him _ and agreed to pay $20,000 to Tullier, McClendon and Bergeron to kill Breaux, according to testimony in federal court.
