| Info | THOMPSON, Fountain Land, a Senator from North Dakota; born near Scottsville, Macoupin County, Ill., November 18, 1854; moved to Girard, Ill., in 1865; attended the public schools in Girard; studied law and was admitted to the bar, but did not engage in extensive practice; member of the board of supervisors of Macoupin County; engaged in mercantile pursuits; moved to Dakota Territory and settled on a farm near Cando, Towner County, in 1888; judge of Towner County Court 1890-1894; engaged in the real estate business and banking in Cando and also in agricultural pursuits; school director; member of the Cando Board of Aldermen; mayor of Cando; appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Martin N. Johnson and served from November 10, 1909, to January 31, 1910, when he resigned; resumed his former business activities in Cando, until his retirement in 1921; moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he resided until his death on February 4, 1942; interment in Hollywood Cemetery.
