InfoShaila Kibria has been breaking down barriers for years in Mississauga. She is a champion of social justice and an enthusiastic advocate for public education as a student at the University of Toronto.

Shaila has taught children, written a widely acclaimed children’s book entitled Maariyah’s Day, freelanced for CBC Radio, and is an essential member of the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) community.

For Shaila, community involvement is about making the lives of regular people in the riding safer, healthier, and more prosperous. Always a trailblazer, Shaila has spearheaded many initiatives that have made a difference in the lives of others.

Shaila was a primary volunteer of Toronto’s Day to Stop Child Sexual Abuse. She established the first food bank at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, and worked hard to reinstate child care service at the University of Toronto Mississauga.

Shaila teaches at her local mosque, the Islamic Forum of Canada, and founded the mosque’s food bank. She is an organizer with the Black Youth of Canada Coalition Against Violence and helps organize National Aboriginal Day.

Shaila has also been volunteering at her local mosque, local churches, seniors’ homes, libraries and local schools for over 15 years.

She and her husband have three children and are proud to raise them in Mississauga.
