Info | Sharon Atkinson is a lifelong resident of New Hanover Township in Burlington County. Sharon is co-owner of Atkinson Masonry since 1979. She also managed the family farm for over 12 years.
Sharon served on the New Hanover Township Board of Education in 2002 and 2003. From 2004 through 2005 served as Mayor and in 2006 as a member of the Township Council.
In all of these posts Sharon exhibited a commitment to sound budgeting practices with an eye to getting taxpayers the largest possible “bang for their buck.” She led initiatives to improve conditions in parks and recreation facilities. Sharon was committed to a leadership style that brought people throughout the community together. Some of these initiatives included the annual town picnic, the town’s first ever participation in the “National Night Out” program, and the annual Holiday celebration in December.
Sharon is a strong advocate for farmland preservation. “In order for farming maintain it’s vital role in New Jersey’s economy,” Sharon remarked, “we must continue to find ways to help the farm community survive. In recent years the trend in New Jersey has been for builders to develop every acre of land the can get their hands on. The right to farm must be preserved not only as a vital economic asset, but for the role farming plays in protecting our environment and precious open space.”
As someone who’s run businesses and balanced a municipal budget, Sharon knows that property tax relief will only occur when legislators are elected who are determined to control spending throughout every level of government.
The same is true for for dealing with the heathcare crisis. “People and business simply can no longer afford what has become a $1,000 a month bill for health insurance for their family’s healthcare insurance. The cost is a killer for individuals and small businesses; even large corporations are hard-pressed to keep pace. New Jersey must become a leader in healthcare reform.
Sharon and her husband Ernest have been married over 31 years. They have raised four children and are blessed to have six grandchildren.
