Info | Through a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Bob Menendez, who represents New Jersey's 13th Congressional District along the Hudson River and overlooking the Statue of Liberty, has made a stellar and rapid rise to the highest levels of influence in the U.S. House, and the highest levels of prominence in American political life. Today, Bob Menendez is the Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, elected by his colleagues on November 14, 2002.
In that post, Bob Menendez is the 3rd-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House, the highest ranking Hispanic in Congressional history, and the only Hispanic ever elected to a leadership position, in either chamber, by either party. In addition to being the first Democratic House Member from New Jersey elected to a Leadership post, he is also the youngest member of the elected Democratic Leadership. Previously, Menendez served two consecutive terms as the Vice Chairman of the Democratic Caucus.
His nationally-recognized leadership has also earned him appointments as Chairman of both the Democratic Task Force on Education and the Democratic Task Force on Homeland Security, an appointment also made in recognition of the effects September 11th has had on his Congressional District, which is right across the Hudson River from Manhattan and Ground Zero.
Working with the Homeland Security Task Force, Congressman Menendez introduced the Bioterrorism Protection Act (BioPAct) and the United States Security Act (the USA Act) to ensure our nation has the resources and tools it needs to respond to, and, most importantly, prevent acts of terrorism -- from protecting our borders, to improving Intelligence, to increasing transportation security, to keeping weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of our enemies.
Internationally, Bob Menendez is a vocal advocate for human rights. For his tireless work in this area, he was awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1998. He currently serves as the Ranking Democratic Member of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee, where he continues that work.
As a senior Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he has been one of the leading proponents in Congress for investing in our transportation hubs, infrastructure, and ports as a means to expand commerce and create jobs. In particular, the Congressman's work has been widely credited with keeping shipping business in the United States at a time of increased competition from Canadian ports.
Also a former State Assemblyman and State Senator -- where he was the author of New Jersey's landmark bias crime law, and New Jersey's telecommunications reform act -- and an attorney in private practice, Congressman Menendez received his B.A. from St. Peter's College in Jersey City, and his law degree from Rutgers University. He was raised in Union City and currently resides in Hoboken.

I don't know - it seems to be Republicans supporting candidates that are felons these days, not Democrats.

I don't know - it seems to be the only party that voted against censuring a convict from the U.S. House of Representatives were the Democrats, not Republicans.
To whom are you referring?

We're calling people with a misdemeanor who only got probation and no jail time convicts now? Are we going to start censuring people for parking tickets?

I do not what my intent was except telling the truth. I did not say Ilhan Omar or Rashida Tlaib because they did not convicted of felons.

Dems need to wakeup and realize that Bowman got special treatment. If he was a normal citizen, he would be in jail now.
And that doesn't even mention the fact that by being so selfish in pulling a file alarm for invalid reasons - he denied people hurt of needed services by wasting resources on what what was essentially political act.
Anyone defending Bowman probably should spend a minute volunteering in their community's fire or rescue services. They might realize why pulling a file alarm without a fire is a felony in most states.

Obvious strengths of Fixer's Jamaal Bowman argument aside I do think today's Menendez voter probably does lean Democrat but not to the extent that simply replacing the margin of victory in the average NJ Senate election with Menendez votes portends obvious GOP victory.

Dems need to wakeup and realize that Bowman got special treatment. If he was a normal citizen, he would be in jail now.
That's a pretty serious allegation. Do you have any data whatsoever to back that up? That a first time offender who pleads guilty to falsely pulling a fire alarm usually gets jail time? I don't have the data, but I'm pretty sure I know our legal system well enough to think that is not the case. Purely anecdotal, but I know people who got probation for doing so.
I'm not a fan of Bowman, I thought his excuses for doing it were BS (and said it here at the time) as his guilty verdict showed. That kind of stunt is also potentially more dangerous than most people realize and if he does it again he absolutely should get jail time. But the special treatment accusation is thrown around too much and often unwarranted.

If I went to Congres as a vistor, and did what Bowman did, would I be jailed? Almost certainly (although I'd probably be out by now).

That is not the only charge he was being charged with. He got the charge of "impeding an official proceeding" dismissed, something not one of the J6 rioters are getting dismissed. I am not condoning J6 riot, but rioters are being charged with the same charge that Bowman got dismissed. I do not care how he impeded the preceding, the fact he did on purpose without a reason is still illegal.

Its....not.....
Its a misdemeanor, A class 2 Misdemeanor at that. Which means that AT MOST Bowman would have gotten 60 days in Jail And/or a Fine. With the judgement determining the criminal sentencing. Which they did.
Bowman has quite literally did the LEAST bad thing of most officials in Congress RN. We have Members of Congress who Quite Literally Sex Trafficked a Minor, sold out his nation for Gold Fucking Bars, AND JOINED WITH A PLOT TO OVERTHROW OUR GOVERNMENT. But "COINCIDENTALLY" all you want to talk about is BOWMAN......
Hmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

New Jersey ballot design is a little bit notorious about hurting third party candidates
just something to keep in mind in regards to guesses about how Melendez does here
