With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to James O. Day, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.
WHEREAS, James O. Day, known simply to family and friends as "Jim," was born on May 15, 1929, a native of Mariba, Menifee County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on Veterans Day, November 11, 2003; he was laid to rest in America's most hallowed burial ground, Arlington National Cemetery; and
WHEREAS, James O. Day was the devoted husband of Dorothy Day; he was the proud father of two sons, James H. Day of Herndon, Virginia, and Robert D. Day of Annapolis, Maryland; and two daughters, Elizabeth Day of Gaithersville, Maryland, and Carolyn Howe of Franklin, Tennessee; he was a loving sibling to two sisters, Virginia Day Powell and Eula Klenk, both of Frenchburg, Kentucky; and a brother, George E. Day of Alexandria, Virginia; and he also leaves behind six beautiful grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, James O. Day graduated from Menifee County High School; after high school, he desired to serve his country and was determined to be admitted to the prestigious United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; he dedicated himself to the effort of preparing for entrance exams by attending Sullivan's Prep School, Washington, D.C., and in 1948, James O. Day became the first person from Menifee County to gain admission to West Point, graduating in 1952; he would also earn a master of arts in political theory and government from the University of Maryland in 1974; and
WHEREAS, in 1952, James O. Day was commissioned as a second lieutenant of field artillery in the United States Army; he continued to serve for 22 years, rising to the rank of colonel, retiring on July 31, 1974; and
WHEREAS, Colonel James O. Day was a valiant soldier serving his country with pride and consistently upholding the West Point motto of "duty, honor, country"; he served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars; his final tour was with the Department of the Army General Staff at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Colonel James O. Day was a highly decorated soldier receiving the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and many other service ribbons; and
WHEREAS, after retirement, James O. Day and his wife, Dorothy, returned to Kentucky settling in Morehead; he opened a lumber business and became active in politics; in 1980, he represented the 7th District of Kentucky as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention; he was also a member of Masonic Lodge #656, Maytown, Kentucky; he and his wife would later relocate to Texas where he served for six years as president of the Texas Old Time Fiddlers Association; and
WHEREAS, James O. Day was considered a great American and a real patriot by all who knew him; he believed strongly in the principles upon which America was founded and would do battle with those who did not; and
WHEREAS, the passing of James O. Day has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;
