Info | Jill Derby began her life in the small town of Lovelock, and her Nevada roots run deep. Her great-grandfather purchased land in Pershing County at the turn of the century and her grandfather worked in the mines in Virginia City. Some of the family’s land is now Derby Dam and Derby Field in Lovelock.
During the Depression, Derby’s parents created the Flying Flapjack ranch in Lovelock from bare land and a simple bunk house where they raised crops and cattle. An accomplished pilot, Derby’s father later volunteered to train fighter pilots for the European and Pacific theatres in World War II.
As a teenager, Derby dreamed of far away lands, encouraged by her parents and the family collection of National Geographic magazines. After graduating from college, she traveled throughout North Africa, India, Asia, and the Middle East. She lived in Saudi Arabia, trekked the Himalayas, and visited the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat, deep in the jungles of Cambodia.
Inspired by her experiences overseas, Derby returned home to pursue her doctorate in Middle Eastern cultures at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and later, at the University of California, Davis.
In 1973 Derby married Douglas County veterinarian Steve Talbot. Together they built their home at the foot of Job’s Peak where they have lived for 33 years. The couple has two children, Ryan and Tobyn.
In 1988, Derby was elected Regent for the University and Community College System of Nevada, a role in which she has distinguished herself for the past 17 years, earning respect and praise from Nevadans of all political stripes. As a Regent, Derby has developed an independent, common-sense approach that has helped Nevada’s system of higher education achieve consistently higher standards of excellence, while increasing access to college for thousands of Nevadans.
Jill Derby is a devoted public servant, a champion of public education, and a leader who has spent her professional life focused on the critical issues facing Nevada’s public education system. With her straight-forward approach to public service, her deep roots in the state, and her unique understanding of the most significant issues of the day – from education to the Middle East – Derby offers a new kind of leadership.
For 17 years, Derby has moved beyond political labels and reached across party lines to seek out the best ideas and the right solutions for our state. A strong, independent voice for Nevada values – that’s what you can count on from her in Congress.
