Description BBC Profile:
The Conservatives held the constituency of Stockport from 1983 to 1992, when Labour's Ann Coffey defeated Anthony Favell. Ms Coffey has retained the seat ever since. She polled more than 50% of the vote in the 2005 general election, securing a majority of 9,163.

At the election, the seat gains three part-wards from Denton and Reddish and a part-ward from each of Hazel Grove and Cheadle. It loses two part-wards to Hazel Grove and a part-ward to Denton and Reddish. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Part of Greater Manchester, Stockport has its own identity as a historic market town, with a strong sense of community. This is very much an urban seat, with no country dwellers among its electorate.

The seat is predominantly residential and residents have good transport connections to Manchester by road, rail and the bus network.

Stockport's historic covered market hall has received significant investment and there are exciting plans for the regeneration of the Hillgate area. The town is home to some very successful schools.
