Description |
BBC Profile:
This is a new seat, drawn predominantly from the constituency of Northavon. The Tory vote in South Gloucestershire was relatively secure until 1997, when they were defeated by the Liberal Democrat Steve Webb.
Webb more than quadrupled his majority over the Tories to almost 10,000 in the 2001 election. In 2005 he secured 52% of the vote and a majority of 11,033.
The new seat of Thornbury and Yate will be very similar to the old Northavon seat, but without Almondsbury, Pilning and Severn Beach wards, and part-wards Bradley Stoke Bowsland and Winterbourne, which are now in Filton and Bradley Stoke. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Much of the workforce in this middle class, suburban constituency is employed in what is known as the "north fringe" of Bristol.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:
LD 25,622 (54.33%)
C 14,562 (30.88%)
Lab 5,122 (10.86%)
Green 922 (1.96%)
UKIP 818 (1.73%)
Others 114 (0.24%)
