BBC Profile:
The Conservatives have held this seat since 1950, with incumbent Robert Syms serving as MP since 1997. He was elected then with a majority of just under 5,300 - less than half his predecessor's majority in 1992. However, the Conservatives regained some ground in 2001, increasing their share of the vote by 3%, and in 2005 Mr Syms was returned again with a majority of just under 6,000.
Boundary changes coming in at the general election move Branksome East ward and part-ward Alderney to Bournemouth West, while part-ward Creekmoor is now fully contained within Poole. To find out what might have happened had these boundary changes been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Set on the north bank of the second largest natural harbour in the world, Poole is a prosperous and economically secure constituency - from Sandbanks, which has some of the highest residential land values in Britain, to the town's many new industrial developments.
The town was once known for fishing, boat-building, and pottery, but now chemical, pharmaceutical, electronic and engineering industries are the main employers.
Tourism is also important to the local economy, with many visitors drawn to the seaside and many yacht clubs based in Poole harbour.
