Description BBC Profile:
Former minister John Patten held the seat for the Conservatives from 1983 to 1997. However, Conservative support in Oxford West and Abingdon fell enough to allow the Liberal Democrat, Dr Evan Harris, to win in 1997. The Liberal Democrats were able to retain the seat in 2001 and again in 2005.

At the election, the seat gains two part-wards from Wantage a part-ward from Witney, and loses five part wards in central Oxford to Oxford East, and a part-ward each to Henley and Wantage. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

From leafy, affluent north Oxford to the sleepy suburbs of Abingdon, Oxford West and Abingdon encompasses the communities of Abingdon, West Oxford, Kidlington and the villages of Radley, Kennington, Sunningwell, Wootton, Cumnor, and North and South Hinksey.

Both North Oxford and Abingdon are affluent. Due to the academic nature of the town, around a third of jobs are of a professional/managerial nature.

The university is a large employer in this seat and the service sector employs over 64,000 people.
