Description |
BBC Profile:
Labour's Dr John Marek was the MP for Wrexham from 1983 before he retired from Westminster in 2001.
Ian Lucas held the seat for Labour at the 2001 and 2005 general elections, registering a 6,819 vote majority at the latter.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
Wrexham is the largest town in North Wales, situated close to the English border.
It is an important regional centre for North Wales and was formerly reliant on its major mining industry. Wrexham has fared better than many similar communities in successfully diversifying its economy in the wake of the collapse of the steel and coal industries. It has a low rate of economic inactivity when compared with other former major centres of heavy industry in Wales.
This is still a major manufacturing centre. Sharp, JCB and Tetrapak are among the large companies with a presence in the Wrexham area.
The large brownfield site at Eagles Meadow has undergone a 95m redevelopment of Wrexham town centre.
