There was an amazingly good documentary made on this race called "Taking on the Kennedys" which I had the good fortune to view a couple years ago.
It really is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, which depicts a idealistic candidate who went into a campaign hoping to run a clean, decent campaign but gets dragged down into the familiar territory of negative campaigning.
"It's crazy," Vigilante remorsefully says to his girlfriend, Sonia, before making his concession speech. "You waste all this time raising all this money to put things on the air that don't really mean anything. It's just unbelievable. They're just 30-second images."
A total of $2,000,000 was spent on the race for the seat vacated by Rep. Ron Machtley (R).
