Description

Labour's Beverley Hughes became the first MP for Stretford & Urmston in 1997 after major boundary changes in 1995 created the seat. Although its name is no longer featured in this seat's title, more than half of the electorate are from the old Davyhulme division - the seat of William Churchill, grandson of the wartime Prime Minister, and a one-time fortress for the Conservative party. The other half of the electorate come from the old Stretford seat, won by a five figure Labour majority in its final contest in 1992, but held by Mr Churchill from 1970 to 1983 before the decline of its inner residential areas and a national swing to Labour. The seat now has an industrial dimension whilst retaining high levels of residential housing from the old Davyhulme seat, the giant chemical works at Carrington and the nearby Partington council estate which serves it provide a perfect illustration of this mix. This seat is home to Old Trafford - football ground of Manchester United.
