Center-right party co-founded by Gibraltar's 5th Chief Minister, Peter Caruana. Party is considered a successor to the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights (AACR), launched as a party in 1945 with the aim of advancing the interests of families evacuated during World War II. The Social Democrats then agreed to merge with the center-left Gibraltar Labour Party in 2005, with a shared interest in opposing any dialogue with Spain whatsoever on the question of the 'return' of Gibraltar to Spain. The Social Democrats have become the territory's main opposition since 2011 and has been led by a founding member of the Gibraltar National Party (which later became the Gibraltar Liberal Party), Keith Azopardi, Gibraltar's Leader of the Opposition since November 30, 2017.
