Description | Democratic gubernatorial candidate Lloyd Jackson has challenged rivals Joe Manchin and Jim Lees to a series of debates around the state, but a Manchin spokeswoman says he is unlikely to participate.
"We're not going to alter our schedule just because the other candidates are desperate for free publicity,'' Manchin spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg said. "The reason that Joe has the lead that he has is because Joe has taken his message directly to the people of West Virginia.
"We're not going change his schedule to be part of the political jockeying that Mr. Lees and Mr. Jackson are part of.''
Lees said he has accepted Jackson's offer, which was extended in letters sent Monday to Lees, a Charleston lawyer who is making his third run for governor, and Manchin, the secretary of state.
"Sure,'' Lees said Tuesday. "I think that's great.''
Lees had earlier challenged Manchin and Jackson, a former state senator, to meet him at noon on Thursday in a non-moderated forum. Lees cancelled the event because only Jackson accepted. Manchin had said he could not participate because of a scheduling conflict.
