Description | COLUMBIA, S.C. - None of South Carolina's 85 school districts have met the new federal education standards set up to track student progress in several areas such as race, disability and poverty, the state Education Department reported Wednesday.
Most of the state's nearly 200 high schools also did not meet the standards. It was reported in September that more than three-fourths of the state's elementary and middle schools also fell into that category.
The federal No Child Left Behind law requires all public schools and districts to show adequate yearly progress measured by the state's standardized test scores or face penalties.
State Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum said the task is daunting to meet the strict standards because a school or district can be considered failing if one subject area falls short of federal goals. |
