DescriptionThe $62 billion state budget signed by Gov. Jim Doyle this week both funds government and eases the state's fireworks laws.

Under 2009 Wisconsin Act 28, a mayor, village president or town chairperson now can designate any person to act as a liaison and issue permits to possess and ignite what otherwise would be illegal fireworks.

For example, a fireworks retailer can obtain a permit from a village president and, in turn, sell permits to customers who purchase fireworks, said Dennis Krueger, the state's assistant attorney general. Those customers could then launch those fireworks within designated boundaries.
