DescriptionThe tax passed 1-0. But the voter apparently wasn't eligible.

Asssumption Parish and state officials disagree on whether the $25-per-parcel property tax approved by Tammy Gros is valid.

The Police Jury says the tax is void. The Secretary of State says it will remain in effect unless one of the Lower Belle River Gravity Drainage District's 85 registered voters files a challenge by Sept. 19.

Gros, of Pierre Part, declined to speak with a reporter for The Daily Comet of Thibodaux.

But she confirmed Friday that she cast the only vote in the July 21 election for a tax expected to bring in $17,500 over the next decade to maintain a drainage pump and levee around a subdivision with about 50 houses in it.

The district line runs down the middle of her street. But several addresses on her side were incorrectly listed as eligible to vote on the property tax, according to documents at the Registrar of Voters' office.

No one in the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office can remember an election in which nobody _ or even only one person _ voted, said Jacques Berry, a spokesman for the secretary of state.
