Description | WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham is trying to decide if Alabama might in two years do what Tennessee didn't on Nov. 7 and become the first Southern state since shortly after the Civil War to elect a black U.S. senator.
Encouraged by his party's election day victories and a strong Senate bid from fellow black congressman Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee, Davis is considering a run in 2008 to unseat Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Mobile.
If he decides to run, Davis would face the formidable challenge of unseating a two-term Republican incumbent in a conservative state that has not sided with a Democratic presidential candidate in 30 years and gave Sessions about 60 percent of the vote when he won a second term in 2002. |
