DescriptionThere will be considerable speculation about who will benefit and who will suffer from Tuesday’s results. People are already publishing various lists of ‘winners’ and ‘losers.’

While there are many people and groups that gained and lost, for now let me suggest that there one one clear winner in Tennessee on Tuesday beyond successful candidates.

Politically, Tennessee’s biggest winner is Lincoln Davis. Hands down and going away, Lincoln Davis comes out of the 2006 elections as the brightest star of his party and the hands-down favorite for their nomination for Governor in 2010.

The irony is that until 2002 Davis was a minor state senator and two-time Congressional loser.

Then Fate took a hand.

Van Hilleary gave up the very safe 4th Congressional District to run for Governor. The slightly Democrat-leaning seat was tailor-made for Davis. The Republicans cooperated by nominating Janice Boling, self-styled ‘pistol-packing Mama.’ Davis ran an excellent campaign that served as a paradigm for Democrats in Conservative districts.

As a Congressman, Davis arrived late to build the sort of career developed by Bart Gordon and John Tanner. He is simply too junior to hope to achieve a major role in the Democrat Caucus, a gerontocracy that makes China’s leadership look like the Backstreet Boys. However, it offers a wonderful launching pad for a Democrat seeking the Governorship, especially at a time when the bench is so short.
