DescriptionNormally, politicians warmly embrace the old adage: "I don't care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right."

These days, don't count U.S. Rep. William Jefferson among them.

As the Nov. 7 primary election for his 2nd District seat draws near, Jefferson, the target of a federal bribery investigation, keeps popping up on a variety of unflattering lists.

The latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine, which hits newsstands this weekend, labels the eight-term Democrat "The Bribe Taker" and ranks him among the "10 worst" members of Congress now serving in Washington.

"While his constituents back home were still reeling from the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, Jefferson was lining his own pockets in Washington," the magazine says in reference to government affidavits where the FBI claims that it videotaped a Virginia businesswoman handing Jefferson a briefcase with $100,000 in $100 bills on July 30, 2005, and that its agents found all but $10,000 of the cash four days later stashed in the freezer of his Washington home.

Never mind that the transaction in question occurred before the storm -- or that the article gets the lay of the political land wrong. Rolling Stone asserts that he "is cruising to re-election." Yet with a dozen challengers -- including two state legislators -- political handicappers say Jefferson is in real danger of losing his seat.
