Description | WASHINGTON — Three of Louisiana’s former top Democrats in Washington are endorsing the chief opponent of troubled U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, in the upcoming November election.
Former U.S. Sens. John Breaux and J. Bennett Johnston joined former U.S. Rep. Chris John, D-Crowley, this week in issuing statements supporting state Rep. Karen Carter, D-New Orleans, the most prominent of 12 candidates running against Jefferson.
Jefferson is seeking his ninth two-year term but is the target of a 17-month federal probe for allegedly taking bribes. Federal agents say they have audio and videotape of Jefferson taking $100,000, of which $90,000 was found in his home freezer in an FBI raid. |
