DescriptionOakland City Councilman Danny Wan tearfully resigned from the council Thursday, telling his colleagues he cannot afford to care for his aging parents on his $63,000-a-year salary.

"I find it more and more difficult to meet my obligations at City Hall while tending to my financial and family obligations," Wan told the council's rules committee, submitting his resignation letter. The committee set a May 17 special election to fill the term that ends in January 2007.

Wan, 41, became Oakland's first openly gay councilman when he was appointed by the council in 2000 to represent District 2, which stretches from Chinatown to east of Lake Merritt, filling the seat vacated by City Attorney John Russo.

An attorney specializing in public finance, Wan quickly became the council's go-to numbers guy and is credited with revamping the city's budget process. He also headed a successful bond effort to fix up Lake Merritt and spearheaded efforts to improve immigrants' access to city government.

"Obviously, it's a big blow. I think he's definitely a smart, hardworking, thoughtful ally," said City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, who was instrumental in Wan's appointment. "I always support and hire people who are smarter than me."
