| Description | Syverson in midst of clash over Keyes
Sen. Dave Syverson, the Rockford Republican who helped engineer the U.S. Senate nomination of Alan Keyes, is at the core of the latest squabble in the state GOP. The Illinois Republican Party is split into factions and full of intraparty bickering, just as with the Democrats. Syverson stands with the party's right wing among the likes of Sen. Steve Rauschenberger of Elgin and U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald of Inverness. After Jack "Sex Party" Ryan quit as GOP nominee for U.S. Senate, and party leaders couldn't agree on anybody else, the party agreed to import Keyes from Maryland.
But some of the most visible party leaders are cool to Keyes. Former Gov. Jim Thompson won't say whether he will even endorse him. Illinois Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, who is party chairman, has distanced herself. Some in the party said privately that they view the Keyes candidacy as Syverson's baby and they're preparing to hang a Keyes defeat squarely on the Rockford senator. |
