Description | "First, state officials banned smoking on all school property. Then they made New Jersey's cigarette tax the third-highest in the nation and took steps toward prohibiting smoking in nearly all workplaces, including bars and restaurants.
Now some lawmakers want to raise the tobacco-buying age from 18 to 21.
"Clearly we have a need to stop teenagers from smoking because the studies show the vast majority of people who smoke start when they are teenagers," said Assemblyman John McKeon, D-West Orange, who is co-sponsoring the bill to raise the tobacco age.
If approved, New Jersey would be the only state in the country to ban the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to people under 21. Three states - Alabama, Alaska and Utah - have raised their minimum age to 19. Another 11 are considering raising the age."
