In November of 2005, Berkeley Heights Township residents voted to change their
form of government from a Township Committee to a Mayor Council Administrator
form. The new government was initiated on January 1, 2007. [Link]
In the new Mayor-Council-Administrator form of government, the Mayor and Council
function as independent branches of government. The Mayor presides over the
Council and exercises the Executive powers of the Township. The Council exercises
the Legislative power of the Township. The Mayor is elected & serves for a four-year
term and the Six (6) Members of Council serve staggered terms of Three (3) years.
