InfoAbout Mike Bell

Mike Bell has been one of the most high profile and well respected Liberal Democrat Councillors since he was first elected. Mike is acknowledged for his effective contributions to council debates and his excellent record of getting involved with matters effecting the North Somerset community.

As well as council activity, Mike is known as an energetic and proactive political campaigner, capable of influencing both hearts and minds on issues as diverse as the environment, health, social justice and international affairs.

In his own part of the world, as agent to Weston-super-Mare MP Brian Cotter, Mike has taken a leading role in transforming the politics of a constituency by helping to win and hold one of the Conservative Party's previously safest seats.

In August 2001, Mike also won a North Somerset Council by-election, snatching the safest Conservative-held ward in the constituency by a majority of 160 votes.

In September 2002, Mike was selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Woodspring Constituency Liberal Democrats.

In the May 2003 local council elections Mike Bell was re-elected to North Somerset Council with an increased majority of 441. Mike was also elected to Weston-super-Mare Town Council, which he led during 2003-04 as head of the 17-strong Lib Dem majority group.

His success in this role led to his appointment as the Constituency Agent for Weston-super-Mare Liberal Democrats in 1995. He led the constituency campaign team to success in the 1997 General Election and worked for Brian Cotter MP from then until the end of 2001, incorporating the campaigns organiser role again during the 2001 General Election.

Mike spent a year working as the Project Co-ordinator for Young Enterprise in North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset, introducing business skills and entrepreneurship to young people. He is currently the Deputy Editor of a series of regional commercial property magazines covering the South West, South Wales, the Midlands and the South of the country.

He also works part-time for the Liberal Democrats Campaigns and Elections Department as a Campaigns Officer focusing on literature development in the Western Counties.
