InfoAttorney General 1992-2000

Jan Graham served as Utah's Attorney General from 1993 to 2001. She was the first (and remains the only) woman elected to statewide office in Utah's history, the only Democrat elected to statewide office in Utah since 1988.

The hallmarks of Graham's leadership of the Attorney General's Office were protection of children, prevention of family violence, and tobacco reform. She argued and won a major criminal jurisdiction case for Utah before the United States Supreme Court in 1993, the only Utah Attorney General to argue before the High Court in decades. She was part of the pioneering group of state attorneys general to file lawsuits against the major tobacco companies. The settlement of that litigation will bring Utah almost one billion dollars over the next 25 years.

Graham's legacy was the fight against violence and abuse at home, particularly in the homes of children. In 1993 she created SAFE AT HOME, a community based program which received national recognition. Graham is the author of the first Child Witness law in the country, which makes the act of domestic violence in the presence of a child the separate and additional crime of child abuse. Most states now have such laws, which national commentators have called one of the single biggest contributors to domestic violence justice in the past decade.

Graham chose not to run for a third term. She is a managing partner of Tesch Graham PLC, a full service law firm based in Park City, Utah. Graham's legal practice focuses on litigation and public protection issues.

Graham is active in various non-profit causes. She is a director and program chair of The Joe Torre Foundation for Domestic Violence in New York City, founded by the manager of the New York Yankees in honor of his mother. Graham is President of Episcopal Community Services in Utah. She writes a weekly column for the Salt Lake Tribune, the state's largest newspaper, advocating citizen involvement in humanitarian and community efforts. She is currently co-chair, with former Governor Norm Bangerter, of Cover the Uninsured Week in Utah, a national initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Jan Graham lives in Salt Lake City with her husband, their two children, and the family's beloved beagles.
